I know, I know. It\u2019s not silver and it\u2019s not really a platter. More like a tray. So, to begin again: when tin trays die. Doesn\u2019t have quite the same ring to it, does it? And you know what? I didn\u2019t check to see what it was made from, no biting nor looking for marks. I just assumed it wasn\u2019t silver because, hey, who leaves a silver tray out in the laneway to die?<\/p>\n

Despite the fact that I don\u2019t believe it was silver but don\u2019t know for sure that it wasn\u2019t, I\u2019m sticking with the silver angle if only because, whimsically, I like to think there is somebody out there who rescued this item and who is currently handing somebody something on a silver platter. Either that or they\u2019re giving it to them on a tin tray (see, it doesn\u2019t resonate, there is no poetry).<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t help thinking there is a lesson to be learnt here, a take-away message, no less, highlighted by my attitude towards the silver platter. For instance, I cling to what is most aesthetically, emotionally pleasing \u2013 the idea of the silver platter \u2013 while resisting the urge to investigate too closely whether or not it is indeed a silver platter because, sub-consciously, I know it is not a silver platter even though there is at least a possibility, albeit remote, that it is actually a silver platter \u2013 which is what I want. So, in order to forestall disappointment, I eliminate entirely any chance of fulfilment.<\/p>\n

Isn\u2019t this rather how ideology works? We subscribe to the Big Idea \u2013 that we live in a democracy with equal rights and freedoms, for instance \u2013 without investigating too closely whether or not this Idea is true in reality (only ratbags do that \u2013 why don\u2019t they go and form their own country\/religion\/club instead of spoiling it for the rest of us?) because we know, deep down, that it is fatally flawed, although if we did examine it more closely, more carefully, we might just discover that the Idea does indeed have real value after all and is most certainly worth picking up and keeping.<\/p>\n

Either that or we should simply leave it lying in a laneway once and for all.<\/p>\n
