Dead armchair No. 32

We Are Family.

This one could just as easily be assigned to sofas but, in the end, I came down on the side of armchairs for reasons that have been explored elsewhere. Armchairs are so much more than small sofas; they speak louder than their bigger cousins and, if further evidence were needed, that is certainly the case here.

Note, for instance, how much more worn and frayed one of the armchairs is compared to the sofa (or indeed its companion armchair). The seat has been rubbed raw by the process of sitting and standing, the constant pressure of thighs and butt cheeks abrading the surface, while the sofa has sustained only superficial surface scratching. Clearly this armchair is where someone wanted to sit, highlighting once again the extent to which armchairs are more frequently loved to death. Armchairs are favourites, sofas are functional.

What to make of the missing armchair back cushions? I must admit this has me stumped. Either they were discarded long ago, which seems unlikely, or they have already been claimed by somebody in need of two black vinyl cushions – which seems only a fraction more likely. Maybe we’ll never know.
